Field School Opportunities

Have you ever thought of joining an archaeological dig in Ireland? Through the AIA’s Archaeological Fieldwork Opportunities Bulletin (AFOB), you can have that opportunity.

  • The Irish Archaeology Field School is a leader in site based archaeology and research. Fine tune your excavation skills in County Meath as you dig around the various sites of the Black Friary, Beactive Abbey and Rossnaree enclosure.
  • Interested in unearthing the details of daily life of the social groups of the Peatlands? The ADS Peatlands Archaeological Field School will help you discover how people leaved in the Bronze Age to Medieval times.
  • Forensic Anthropology, often called the archaeology of death, allows you to learn from bones. From how people lived to details about their daily lives, an introductory course in Kells, Ireland will give you the chance to test out your CSI skills, in ancient Ireland.
  • Caherconnel Archaeological Field School in Clare, Ireland will teach you with the basic fieldwork skills including troweling techniques, artifact recovery, and the recording system amongst many others all while digging in a unique and plentiful Ireland landscape.

  • The tomb at Newgrange in County Meath is older than the Great Pyramids. Built around 3200 BC, this megalithic tomb is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and draws nearly 200,000 visitors each year.
  • The Kells is the famous round tower near the monastery from which the Book of Kells comes from. The book currently resides in Trinity College in Dublin and has served as inspiration for the Gala’s save-the-date postcard as well as the invitation designs.
